🇺🇸 UN Security Council adopts resolution condemning Iran’s Gulf attacks

The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning attacks targeting Gulf countries and Jordan, urging Iran to immediately halt its military actions in the region.

The draft resolution, sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), received strong international backing. During the vote held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, 13 out of the 15 Security Council members voted in favor, while none voted against it.

China and Russia abstained from the vote but chose not to use their veto power.

Over 135 countries cosponsor the resolution

Diplomats noted that the resolution gained support from 135 UN member states, making it one of the most widely backed draft resolutions in recent years.

The resolution strongly condemns attacks on critical infrastructure in the Gulf region, including ports, energy facilities, and civilian installations. It also calls on Tehran to immediately stop hostilities in order to reduce tensions.

Iran strongly criticizes the decision

Following the vote, Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir-Saeid Iravani, sharply criticized the resolution, calling its adoption a “regrettable day for the international community”.

He accused the United States and Israel of fueling the conflict and argued that Iran itself has suffered heavy civilian casualties.

Russia and China explain abstentions

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, said Moscow abstained because the resolution was “unbalanced” and unlikely to contribute to peace.

Meanwhile, China’s representative urged all parties to exercise restraint, warning that continued conflict could further destabilize the Middle East.
